After completing a Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences in the team of Didier Cabanes, at the Institute for Investigation and Innovation in Health (I3S, University of Porto, Portugal), in 2016, Filipe Carvalho continued his postdoctoral career in France: first in the Unit of Bacteria-Cell Interactions at Institut Pasteur, headed by Pascale Cossart, and then in the Epigenetics and Cellular Microbiology team at INRAE’s MICALIS Unit, headed by Hélène Bierne and Alessandro Pagliuso. Filipe’s research career has been focused on the Gram-positive bacterial pathogen Listeria monocytogenes and in the understanding of its lifestyle and mechanisms underlying host interactions and pathogenesis.
Filipe has been recruited as an engineer into Jonathan Weitzman’s team, on 1 July 2026 to work on a project aiming to identify compounds targeting pathogen-hijacked host epigenetic pathways to counter infection without promoting antimicrobial resistance.
